Our Call to Duty – Hotter Than Hell? – In Texas, there is a city (Wichita Falls) where a particular bicycle race has been held each year since August 1982. You guessed it: the “Hotter ‘N’ Hell Hundred” (HHH). Why would anyone want to go to hell or a place that is hotter than hell, so to speak?

Not the bike race, mind you; it is a wonderful, scorching event where it is normally one hundred degrees, with a 100-mile ride coupled with other events over the course of a weekend. Nevertheless, some young men once told me they were going to hell to party with their friends, and my response was that I am not going to hell. And this is hopefully your answer.

Jesus paid the price so that no one would have to go to hell except for Satan and the angels that followed him.

18 “For you know that you were not redeemed from your useless [spiritually unproductive] way of life inherited [by tradition] from your forefathers with perishable things like silver and gold, 19 but [you were actually purchased] with precious blood, like that of a [sacrificial] lamb unblemished and spotless, the priceless blood of Christ.” (1Peter 1:18-19 AMP)

Is there an excuse for anyone who goes to hell and stands before the judgment seat of GOD and expects to be sent to Heaven? In years past preaching about hell scared people into choosing to follow Jesus Christ to avoid going to hell. Today, preaching love is the preferred manner or method.

There is an old story about the wind and the sun competing; about which one could get the young boy to remove his coat. Long story short, the wind blew, causing the boy to wrap his coat tighter, and the sun made it so warm the boy gladly took off his coat. Now, the question is how does this story apply to being saved from sin and death?

Jesus told His disciples, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matt 10:28). Our GOD is a consuming fire, but He is also Love; Heb 12:28 states, “For our God is a consuming fire,” and 1John 3:16 states, “he that loves not does not know GOD; for GOD is Love.” 

Love in one hand and fear in the other. Solomon wrote to fear GOD and keep His commandments (Eccl 12:13), while Jesus said it this way: if you love Me, keep My commandments (Jn 14:15). We must come to the decision to fear and love GOD acceptably, and I pray you have and you will.
